Statistics of Obesity

Obesity is fast becoming one of the most common diseases worldwide. This is especially so in America, where the rates of obesity in statistical surveys by the government shows an increasing trend in overweight adults. Most statistics of obesity around the world are obtained either via patient provided height and weight or actual measurement of height and weight. It is commonly understood that the patient provided data often shows a lower prevalence of obesity compared to the direct height and weight measurement. It is therefore important to know which method was used to collect the statistics. The rate of obesity seems to be increasing in the United States and data suggests that it is more than 15% in almost of the states in the US. An interesting trend though is … Read entire article »

Food addiction: Barrier to losing weight fast

Food addiction is more real than you think.  A study by Yale graduate students reported in the Archives of General Psychiatry that seeing certain food can activate the same areas of the brain as a drug addict sees a drug. This may help explain why it is often hard to lose weight and to combat obesity. The study makes use of the functional MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to study areas of the brains that are activated amongst 48 women when they were given a chocolate milkshake or a tasteless liquid and the women were of varying weight and BMI. Milkshake seems to trigger the anterior cingulate cortex and the medial orbitofrontal cortex of the brain. These same areas have been previously studied in drug addicts. The activities in the brain were … Read entire article »

How to Lose Weight Without a Crash Diet

Much of the western world is on the verge of a health disaster.  Widespread obesity now threatens the economy and productivity of nations such as the UK and the USA.  Governments have warned that unless the situation improves, it may be necessary to intervene with ‘fat-busting’ laws.  This legislation may include taxing fast and convenience foods and restricting access to certain state provided healthcare for the significantly overweight.  Of course, obesity in itself is a multi-million dollar industry and there are thousands of high profile diets, fitness videos and ‘get thin quick’ systems out there.  However, many health professionals believe that a relatively slow and steady weight loss is more likely to succeed. Too often, people achieve huge weight loss in a relatively short space of time only to quickly regain … Read entire article »

How fast to lose weight: Understanding carbohydrates, proteins and fats

The stability of body weight and composition requires a person’s energy intake to be balanced with the expenditure. When there is an excess of energy intake, the excess energy is stored in the body and body weight increases. Conversely, when the output exceeds dietary intake, a loss of weight begins. In addition, appropriate balance must be maintained with regards to the intake of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. The amount of energy liberate from 1 gram of carbohydrate is approximately 4 kilocalories. 1 gram of protein gives the same amount (4 kilocalories) of energy. While 1 gram of fats burns to give 9 kilocalories. Carbohydrates and fats Carbohydrates and fats are the main energy source of a person.
